Student Opportunities at the Rand Institute
Generally there are three types of opportunities available
to students at the Senator Walter Rand Institute for Public
Affairs all tied to supporting the program activities of
the Institute. The opportunities include:

Walter Rand Institute Graduate
Assistant -- this is
the most prestigious of our opportunities and is reserved
for a student with a strong scholastic record, a demonstrated
analytical skill, and an expressed interest in public
service as their career goal. The award includes a generous
stipend with benefits and tuition for one year. To apply
students must submit an example of their scholarly work,
a recent transcript, three letters of recommendation,
with a cover letter describing their commitment to public
service. Students need not be financial aid eligible
in order to apply.
The student accepted for the WRI Graduate
Assistant award will work approximately 20 hours a
week at the Institute, assigned to work on at least
one major project, to staff working groups assessing
current policy issues and to draft a key working paper
intended to generate policy action.

Senator Walter Rand Graduate
Fellow – this
fellowship is an annual award for a graduate student
intended to cover 20 hours per week work for 40 weeks
at the Walter Rand Institute. While at the WRI, the
fellow will focus on an identified community development/public
policy topic, as well as participate in the full range
of WRI projects and activities.
Students interested in
applying/competing for this award should send a 5 page
essay on one of the following community development/
public policy issues as it relates to Camden City or
Southern New Jersey:
- Public safety
- Regional development
- Not for profit management
- Community development
- Economic development
Essay should accompany
a letter of application summarizing the student’s
academic and occupational experience and aspirations,
a copy of transcripts, and two letters of recommendation.
Students must have at least a 3.0 GPA and need not
be financial aid eligible in order to apply.

Project Assistants
-
Project
Assistant I - graduate students hired
in this category will be hired to work on specific
grant funded projects within the Rand. Students will
be hired for specific skill sets required by the
funded program. The hours and rate of pay will as
a result be dependent on the terms of the grant.
These positions will be advertised for as needed.

Project Assistant II – as
there is funding available and programmatic need;
the Walter Rand Institute will hire students to
work up to 20 hours per week to support a range
of projects within the Institute. The position
is intended to assist WRI Program Managers while
providing the graduate student with professional
work experiences that will extend their repertoire
of skills. Students should submit a letter of interest
and a resume to apply for these positions. They
will be advertised as needed on the WRI website.
We are currently accepting applications for the summer
and fall for this position.
Leonard Rand Scholar – this scholarship is to be
awarded to full-time graduate students participating in
the programs of the Walter Rand Institute for Public Affairs
based upon academic merit and financial need. This award
may be given in conjunction with the Senator Walter Rand
Graduate Fellowship or may be awarded to a Project Assistant
and will typically range from $500 to $1500.
