Student Opportunities at the Rand Institute

Generally there are three types of opportunities available to students at the Senator Walter Rand Institute for Public Affairs all tied to supporting the program activities of the Institute. The opportunities include:

  • Walter Rand Institute Graduate Assistant -- this is the most prestigious of our opportunities and is reserved for a student with a strong scholastic record, a demonstrated analytical skill, and an expressed interest in public service as their career goal. The award includes a generous stipend with benefits and tuition for one year. To apply students must submit an example of their scholarly work, a recent transcript, three letters of recommendation, with a cover letter describing their commitment to public service. Students need not be financial aid eligible in order to apply.

The student accepted for the WRI Graduate Assistant award will work approximately 20 hours a week at the Institute, assigned to work on at least one major project, to staff working groups assessing current policy issues and to draft a key working paper intended to generate policy action.
Applications should be sent attn: Ms. Jennifer Intriago, Walter Rand Institute, Rutgers—Camden, 411 Cooper Street, Camden, NJ 08102-1521 and received by April 21, 2008.

  • Senator Walter Rand Graduate Fellow – this fellowship is an annual award for a graduate student intended to cover 20 hours per week work for 40 weeks at the Walter Rand Institute. • Project Assistants

    • Project Assistant I - graduate students hired in this category will be hired to work on specific grant funded projects within the Rand. Students will be hired for specific skill sets required by the funded program. The hours and rate of pay will as a result be dependent on the terms of the grant.
These positions will be advertised for as needed.

    • Project Assistant II – as there is funding available and programmatic need; the Walter Rand Institute will hire students to work up to 20 hours per week to support a range of projects within the Institute. The position is intended to assist WRI Program Managers while providing the graduate student with professional work experiences that will extend their repertoire of skills. Students should submit a letter of interest and a resume to apply for these positions. They will be advertised as needed on the WRI website.
We are currently accepting applications for the summer and fall for this position.

Leonard Rand Scholar – this scholarship is to be awarded to full-time graduate students participating in the programs of the Walter Rand Institute for Public Affairs based upon academic merit and financial need.
